    How Grey Muzzle Helped
Medical expense grant for adoptable dogs

Central Texas Dachshund Rescue (CTDR) discovered lonely Sugar Pie, a 12-year-old Dachshund, when a Good Samaritan alerted them that Sugar Pie and a buddy were abandoned and chained to a tree after their owners left. Sugar Pie’s buddy was so scared during a severe thunderstorm, he wrapped himself tightly around the tree and choked to death. Sugar Pie lay by his side until help came and a place for her was secured at CTDR.

The sweet little girl had many medical issues that were addressed by CTDR, thanks in part to a grant from The Grey Muzzle Organization. She tested low-positive on her heartworm test but due to her age, continued taking her monthly Heartgard medication instead of risky heartworm treatment. Sugar Pie had very bad teeth and even after dental treatment, she still had an oral nasal fistula. Part of the grant provided treatment of that condition. In addition, the grant covered medication she needed as she grew older and started having trouble walking.

The best thing that happened to Sugar Pie came in the form of a new foster mom and a loving home for her last five years. There, she thrived, living with several other dogs in the home, and quickly became a beloved household member. She was a master of the doggie door until her final year when she lost mobility in her rear legs and started getting stuck in the door. Eventually her mobility worsened and she no longer had the strength to maneuver her legs. The time came when she could no longer walk and sadly, her foster mom had to say goodbye to Sugar Pie in January 2014, just shy of her 17th birthday.

Sugar Pie’s story and her longevity exemplifies Grey Muzzle’s commitment to the belief that elderly dogs have a right to live comfortably and as a bonus, make a positive impact on people around them, in their golden years!
