Treena was picked up as a stray and taken to Stray Hearts Animal Shelter (the Humane Society of Taos) in New Mexico. While it’s sad that this gentle nine-year-old didn’t have a home to call her own, it was quite fortuitous she ended up in the care of Stray Hearts.

During her initial veterinary exam, the staff noted that she could not open her mouth all the way, had several damaged teeth and was blind in one eye, likely due to injury. Upon a closer examination, an X-ray showed scattered bits of buckshot through her head and neck with damage to her jaw on both sides. No one knows how she got hurt, but they were all amazed at how sweet natured and affectionate Treena is considering she’s been through something quite traumatic.

Treena was scheduled to see a veterinary dentist for two surgeries (one for each side of her jaw) in February and March to heal her old wounds and help her feel better. And, because she’s such a friendly girl, she had a forever family waiting for her and got to go home after her second surgery last month.
