Mysti
Mysti is three success stories rolled into one! This ten-year-old border collie has been with her mom since she was just a pup, and throughout her life has been extremely active in Frisbee competitions. Her mom originally intended to breed Mysti because of her pedigree and carrying a breed-rare color gene called the Australian Golden. Even though the breeding never happened, Mysti also was never spayed.
Recently at a routine check-up, a mammary tumor was discovered. Mysti's mom considered herself fairly educated on animal health, but she was shocked to learn about the increased risk of mammary cancers for intact females. So much of spay/neuter education focuses on preventing unwanted litters, but remaining intact can have serious health consequences for our pets as well, especially as they age.
Mysti's mom was recently diagnosed with COPD and unable to work any longer on top of many of her own medical expenses. She says, "There have been and are more doctors for me to see, and their diagnoses and prognoses...it gets very overwhelming for me at times. But my one constant is my beloved Mysti. She keeps me walking, she keeps me breathing when I start panicking, she helps keep my depression at bay....she's my life right now, and I need to save hers any way I can."
Thanks to a grant from The Grey Muzzle Organization, Fairy Tail Endings was able to help Mysti. She had her mammary tumor removed and was spayed at the same time. Mysti has recovered well and her mom has now vowed to be a voice on the spay/neuter issue. She has already started spreading the word of this experience with other parents of furry friends. She says, "It is way too important to go unsaid. I don't blog, but I will figure out a way to make other people aware that this is a potential life-threatening issue for pets, and owners need to be careful and informed in their choices."
Thanks to you, Mysti received the medical care she needed, gets to stay at home with her mom and her mom is more educated on the importance of spaying/neutering pets.
