At the Virginia Beach SPCA, a Grey Muzzle grantee, they are dedicated to offering senior dogs The Three Cs: Care, Comfort, and Compassion. This means making sure old dogs get the veterinary treatment they need, and providing special comforts and compassion, in order to make a difficult time a little easier.
Mastiff Rescue of Florida is a breed-specific English Mastiff rescue. Through their “Oldies but Goodies” program, which Grey Muzzle helps support, they care for big older dogs, many abandoned by owners who can't pay veterinary bills or by puppy mills and backyard breeders after they are no longer profitable.
Having a senior Labrador Retriever herself, trainer Victoria Stilwell is reminded daily how precious each moment we have with our dogs truly is. So many families are convinced that adopting an 8 week old puppy is the only route when getting a new dog, but the truth is that senior dogs often make a much easier transition into your home.
In large shelters, older pets can be overlooked. To address this, Great Plains SPCA, the largest animal welfare organization in the Kansas City area, uses the innovative program SASSY and a Grey Muzzle grant to find adopters for its senior dogs and support the relationship between senior citizens and their pets.
