    How Grey Muzzle Helped
    Medical Expense Grant
    Organization

Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) rescued 8-year-old Apollo from the city shelter, where it was discovered he had a large mass. He also seemed to be overly tired, even for a lower energy dog. Because of his age and possible medical needs, Apollo was transferred into APA!’s care for treatment and adoption.

Thanks to a generous grant from The Grey Muzzle Organization, APA!’s medical clinic has been piloting intake diagnostics for senior dogs, which meant Apollo automatically received blood and urinalysis testing. His blood test showed low T4, so APA! started treating him for hypothyroidism, which often causes lethargy. And the mass? It was just a fatty deposit.

After being prescribed thyroid medication, Apollo started feeling better, and his energy level improved. Just a few weeks after arriving at APA!, Apollo’s foster home became his forever home, and this sweet senior will now get to live out his golden years getting the love and care he needs and deserves!

The senior dog diagnostics being piloted at APA! led to an earlier diagnosis and treatment of Apollo’s chronic thyroid condition, and also gave his foster-turned-adopter a more complete picture of his overall health and ongoing needs. APA! is so grateful to Grey Muzzle for making the pilot possible, which is improving the lives—and adoption prospects—of at-risk senior dogs.
